This is a win-win situation: seahorses, penguins, and an albino alligator are so much more fun to see at night, with your friends, sipping a cocktail. Don't even get me started on the planetarium show. Go early and pick up a ticket. They are first-come, first-serve and I felt like I was flying through space. Seriously. Some of the daytime exhibitions are closed for Nightlife so be sure to check the website for what will be available if you're set on seeing one thing. TIPS: -tickets are $12 online on their website -Rainforest closes around 9pm, get in before then if you want to see butterflies, reptiles, and exotic fish. No drinks/food allowed. -The "Live Roof" or whatever looks really weird at night, I definitely think that's a daytime thing. -Lines for drinks are much shorter as you go up the stairs, no one remembers to go upstairs when they're tipsy and there's animals everywhere -GO to the planetarium show (pick up a ticket early) and the aquarium (albino alligator?? yes please!!!) -parking garage close by, costs money. Street parking if you can find it in the foggy cold SF nighttime. Read the parking signs, or else SF is very happy to give you a parking ticket. -Drinks are cash only and on the pricey side. Have fun, take your friends, your date, and don't forget- free on your birthday!

Five stars for bitchin' scorpian bowls with weird platic animals and mermaids that don't taste like they have any booze in them at all the then knock you on your ass when you least expect it. One star for sketchy service. (uh, if people take food from a buffet and it turns out not to be a free for all buffet, what you should then do is kindly ask them to stay away from the buffet or hang a sign for the party it's for. What you should NOT do is make the people who took the food by mistake scoop that food BACK into the buffet from their plates, that they could have coughed or sneezed on or ate from already. I'm just sayin'.) Although for different reasons, eat and drink at your own risk. No lifeguard on duty.

Update 09.10.05: Um, yeah. What the hell happened to this place in a matter of nine months? It suddenly turned into a Marina type sinkhole with staff that likes to either ignore you or treat you like you're at a house party. It took six of us about 20 minutes to get drinks and when they closed down the upstairs some asshat in a dorky sportjacket grunted, "LET'S GO!" as if the frat party just got busted by the cops. Wow was I less than impressed and it will take some major convincing to get me back here again. Small plate style Mediterranean cuisine with excellent mussels and amazing Tabil-crusted pork. One of the largest restaurants I've seen in San Francisco with great modern styling. Cool atmosphere with great mojitos, and very reasonably priced...
