I have only been to DNA a few times, seeing as I only go there once in a blue moon to catch a good band or two.  However, in the few times that I've been there, I can tell you that it's a great venue for live music. I ventured out there in December of 2009 to see EYEHATEGOD, January to see Saint Vitus, and just a few nights ago to see the original three-piece line up of Corrosion of Conformity, with supporting bands, Goatsnake, Eagle Twin, Black Breath, and Righteous Fool.  I've been to shows with heavy, loud bands like this before, and at a venue even the size of DNA, or hell, even bigger, there is a great potential for the sound to sound muddy, distorted, or just plain awful.  This has never been the case with DNA! The set by Goatsnake for instance the other night, sounded incredibly good considering Greg Anderson plays from two full stacks, Scott Reeder plays from two fridges, and the band was almost twice as loud as any of the other bands that night.  It was crystal clear (and it helped that the bands were all in top form as well). Aside from the sound being great, I can only attest to the feel of the joint.  It's dark, relatively clean for a divey club, the drink prices are a bit high, but what venue have you been to where didn't expect to pay a grip of money for a beer?  Can't complain about what's normal these days!  But it IS conveniently located across the street from a liquor store, so save your bread at the club and go buy some cheap tall cans for budget boozin'! Coming from Sac, it's a relatively easy venue to find, there is plenty of free street parking after certain hours, and close to some mom and pop food joints for a bite to eat. Hell, it's even good for the kids, as some shows (all the ones I have been to) are all ages, so the kiddies can slam dance to classic trash era C.O.C., or gutter punks in training can enjoy some EYEHATEGOD!  Let the future of America learn the ropes at DNA(??). Great venue for a show!

Two stars ... three stars ... two stars ... I just can't decide.  I have a real love-hate relationship with this place.   When it's good it's very, very good and when it's bad ... it's irritating. I guess I've spent a good bit of time here ... but always during the day.  I've never been here during its nightclub incarnation.  For a while, when I was living in the neighborhood, I bought coffee here almost every morning.  They do make a mean cup of coffee ... Often on the weekend, I would go for breakfast. Mainly, I find the service to be very inconsistent.  For one thing, some of the folks behind the counter seem to have trouble prioritizing.  When the line is backing up, it might not be the time to stock the back of the counter.  There are two cash registers but they never seem to have them both going at the same time ... this can be problematic while out-of-towners casually peruse the breakfast menu at the counter when the five people behind them just want a cup of coffee and get to work. The thing that really makes me crazy ... the wi-fi goes out a lot but the staff never admits that it isn't working.  On one occasion, several people in the place were asking about the internet but the girl behind the counter just kept saying to shut down and restart the browser.  Ugh.  It was clearly not working ... I don't know ... reset the router ... or something ... at the very least admit that it isn't working.  Here's the thing about that ... the wi-fi isn't really free, is it?   The customers pay for food or coffee to be there and use the internet and, if it's not working, I really think the customers have a right to know that before they order food and make themselves comfortable. But ... during the day at least, they sometimes play  Belle and Sebastian and that just makes me happy ... OK, three stars.

Bruno's is  your typical post-college aged crowd looking to dance to top 40 beats.  It has a decent-sized front bar area with some seating and a few back rooms with more.   The front room plays hip-hop and in the back and around the corner you can dance to techno beats. The crowd at Brunos ranges from East Bay b&t to mission hipsters.  You'll probably never see any Marina kids in here so the vibe is pretty casual.  I went to get my dance on and to prove a point...some tall white guys can really shake that ass. The only downside to Brunos is the $10 cover.  I'd head back if I was in the neighborhood, but only for a few songs.
