My cousin and I got the opportunity to visit Gold Room last night for the first time. Kaskade - http://www.last.fm/mus... - was the special guest DJ that night, and we're big fans so we decided to check it out. I have to say that both he and I have nothing but positive things to say about the club. We drove in the same night from Birmingham, and had some preconceived notions about the fact that it's referred to as an "ultra-lounge" and was once a strip club AND a church; and were even concerned when getting closer to arriving there and seeing the sketchy clubs and spas in the general vicinity. But once we arrived, all negative ideas about GR were squelched. We drove in, had the car valet parked ($5) and headed for the door to "pick up" our advance-purchased tickets - both the valets and the door guy were polite and considerate to the fact that we were first-timers, and were pretty welcoming. Walking into the club, it was nothing like an ultra-lounge (picture seats EVERYWHERE, with a dance floor roughly the size of a corner of one of many bars in the place). It had all the makings of a dance club - dance floor taking up the bulk of the middle of the club, with a bar at one or more ends, and an upstairs area for checking out the full scene from above. Perfect. (The upstairs and perimeter seating were both reserved for VIP clientele, but we typically roll in general admission - we can sit at home and in the car... we head to the club to sweat off the work week. We're soldiers in the trenches, not generals in chairs... lol) The dance floor, mind you, seems pretty small once the place gets full, but that's to be expected, so no surprises there and no points lost. There's a dedicated main bar off the dance floor, serving up just about everything it seemed. And the bartenders were pretty engaging and attentive; and even good about slipping a freebie for us soda drinkers on occasion. lol (There are a couple of other bars reserved for the lower and upper VIP areas, but since we didn't venture, I can't comment on those.) The sound system is killer in the place (proven by my continuing ringing ears), with the DJ booth overlooking the main floor, and the basslines dropping like mad. Periodically throughout the night "go-go" performers (for lack of a better description), and the performer swinging on the ring (as seen in one of the business photos here on rateclubs) will do their thing, adding a little extra vibe to the experience. The clientele runs the gambit from what we could tell. All different races/cultures, social groups - facing south you've got the ridiculously-attractive ladies with the tightest clothing I've ever seen on a person outside of scuba diving; facing west you've got the frat-boy look, with collared-shirts buttoned-down a few buttons too far, and the hair moussed a little too perfectly; facing north you've got the true dance fans sporting Chuck Taylors, jeans and wicked-graphic'ed tees, sweating for dear life with the music; and facing east you've got the folks that spent way too much time getting prepped-up to break a sweat, enjoying the next drink and just being a part of the "scene". Regardless of the differences, though, everybody seems to find a way to co-exist and enjoy themselves. We didn't notice any "testosterone-poisoning" the whole evening - no fights, no shoving, no jack*ssery, and the bouncers/security in the club (I talked to a few, just to shoot the *ship*) were some of the coolest ones I've ever interacted with. :overall thumbs up: So I don't make this a small novel, my complete impression of Gold Room? It's DEFINITELY a club I'll check out again. In the land of hip-hop/rump-shakin' overload, it's good to find a club that can deliver something different but very "pure club", all at the same time. My frequent clubbing days are long behind me I think, but GR is a great place to break the dinner-and-a-movie monotony of the married/over-25 life. (And for those who would disagree with me on this review, fair enough; but I invite you to come to Birmingham and try out any one of our "clubs" - you'll *RUN* (not walk) back to GR. lol)

Went to the opening party and had a fantastic time. Great great food, atmosphere, and bubbly. Decor is sophisticated and dark-with amazing attention to detail. Gina knows what she's doing. Congrats!
